    The programme unfolds

Whilst India is a destination in its own right, the New Delhi General Meeting will offer a great deal more than a ride on a an elephant and a lamb biryani. Following the review of the feedback from Barcelona, the order of the programme will be changed with the Keynote and separate meetings taking place on Friday 11 November, followed by the Plenary Day, workshops and Business Meeting on Saturday 12 November. This will allow delegates from the different disciplines to interact on their specific issues right from the start, and then be able to pick up and discuss the Plenary Day content with people they already know.

One of the major issues that the publishers will be addressing is the outsourcing phenomenon, and there will also be a review from the Barcelona Publishers' Meeting - how have you all responded to the 'free-free' challenge? And the sales managers, web, and business development people amongst you will be kept very busy by the Online Revenue Generation Workshop we have planned.

As well as extended workshops so you all have more time to address the different topics, and a special session on mobile and what we can learn from Asia's experience with their 3G services, there'll be plenty more to tell you about over the coming months. Watch this space!

India's newest sport - yak skiing

The American magazine Time has recommended the little-known sport of yak skiing in India as one of the 10 best ways in Asia to relax the mind. The magazine's Asian edition says this 'implausible extreme sport' involves going at rocket speed uphill attached by rope to a yak charging downhill.

Yak skiing is carried out in the Indian hill resort of Manali, where it is run by a Tibetan man, Peter Dorje. In the morning, Mr Dorje heads to a high slope with his beasts, trailing out a rope behind him. When Mr Dorje reaches the top, he ties a large pulley to a tree, loops the rope through it and attaches the cord to a stamping, snorting yak.

The yak skier waits nervously below, wearing skis and holding a bucket of pony nuts. Then it is all down to the skier, who is tied to the other end of the rope. They shake the bucket of nuts to attract the yak - and put it down fast as the beast charges down the mountain, pulling the skier upwards at terrifying speed.

"If you forget yourself in the excitement and shake the bucket too soon, you'll be flattened by two hairy tons of behemoth," the magazine says.

Mr Dorje's advice is: "Never shake the bucket of nuts before you're tied to the yak rope."

    Delicious India #1: Kashmir

The finest of India's cuisines is as rich and diverse as its civilization. It is an art form that has been passed on through generations purely by word of mouth, from guru (teacher) to vidhyarthi (pupil) or from mother to daughter.

The hospitality of the Indians is legendary. In Sanskrit Literature the three famous words 'Atithi Devo Bhava' or 'the guest is truly your god' are a dictum of hospitality in India. Indians believe that they are honoured if they share their mealtimes with guests. And of particular importance is the Indian woman's pride that she will not let a guest go away unfed or unhappy from her home.

Kashmiri cuisine - Kashmiri cuisine is essentially meat-based. Lamb, goat's meat and chicken form the basis of many a famous dish. It is flavoured delicately with saffron and kashmiri chillies which are not too spicy but give a rich red colour to the food. Cottage cheese or "chaman" as it is called, is a popular accompaniment to many meats and vegetables.

Lots of dried fruit and nuts like walnuts, dates, and apricots are used in puddings, curries and snacks. The fresh water fish like trout found in the numerous fresh water streams of the Himalayas is a delicacy.

Food is generally followed by a generous serving of fresh fruits like strawberries, plums, cherries and apples that grow in the cool climate of Kashmir.
